Battle for the Bayou II Update

On February 19th, 2022 at the Atomic Hobby Shop in Cypress, Texas; the second Marvel Crisis Protocol: Battle for the Bayou took place. To make this event even more prestigious was the its upgrade to being a Las Vegas Open 2022 Season Qualifier.

With an impressive (16) participants, the tournament took off with not only the stakes of being a participant in the Battle for the Bayou finals but also the LVO qualifier. Bragging rights, free entries into future major events and of course the wealth of prize support drew in some fierce competitors.

While we wait for the dust to settle and wounds to heal (ie wait to interview participants), let us take a look at the top three lists.

The overall winner was Zach Cohen with an impressive 4/0 record. He lead the pack with an amazing Web Warriors list:

Characters: Black Cat, Black Panther, Captain America (Sam Wilson), Doctor Voodoo, Ghost Spider, Loki (w/ Infinity Gem: Space), Moon Knight, Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Toad and Venom

Team Tactics: Advanced R&D, All Webbed Up, Brace for Impact, Disarm, Indomitable, Lethal Protector, Marked for Death, Medpack, Mission Objective and Spider-Tracker

Extraction Crises: Deadly Legacy Virus Cured?, Spider-Infected Invade Manhattan and Struggle for the Cube Continues

Secure Crises: Cosmic Invasion! Black Order Descends on Earth, Riots Spark Over Extremis 3.0 and Super-Powered Scoundrels Form Syndicate

Second Place was claimed by Big Blake with his Convocation roster, earning him a 3/1 record:

Team Tactics: Advanced R&D, Bar With No Doors, Brace for Impact, Fall Back, Follow Me, Indomitable, Iron Bound Books of Shuma Gorath, Medpack, Plane of Polhldahk and Tactical Analysis

Secure Crises: Fear Grips World as "Worthy" Terrorize Cities, Mystic Wakanda Herbs: Fact or Fiction?, Spider-Infected Invade Manhattan

Rounding out the top 3 was Bret F. with his dual Brotherhood of Mutants and Avengers roster, ending the event with a 3/1 record.

Characters: Magneto, Toad, Scarlet Witch, Captain America (Sam Wilson), Rogue, Juggernaut, Iron Fist, Mystique, Doctor Voodoo and Quicksilver

Team Tactics: Asteroid M., Do You Know Who I Am?, Brace for Impact, Heroes for Hire, Deception, No More Mutants, Field Dressing, Follow Me, Can I Borrow That? and Mission Objective

Extraction Crises: Deadly Legacy Virus Cured?, Research Station Attacked! and Fear Grips World as "Worthy" Terrorize Cities

Secure Crises: Deadly Meteors Mutate Civilians, Demons Downtown! Has Our Comeuppance Come Due? and  Intrusions Open Across City as Seals Collapse

The Affiliations were fairly evenly distributed, with Midnight Sons, Web Warriors and X-Men being the most selected as either single or double Affiliations. Among those top affiliations, the numbers are quite interesting.

Web Warriors came out with the strongest record, with being used in (8) games, garnering 6 wins and 2 loses with a 75% win ratio.  Midnight Sons were used in a whopping 9 games with a 5/4 record with a 56% win ratio.  Convocation snuck in with 8 games with a record of 5/3 at 63% win ratio and X-Men being used in 11 games but with a poor showing of 2/9 record at an 18% win ratio. Might be time for some extra Danger Room training if you ask me.

Interestingly enough, winning Priority seemed to be a significant determining factor at this event. Of the 31 games played, 75% of those that won had Priority.

Unfortunately not every round saw which Extraction/Secure Crises were used (glitch or human error, I know not). However, based on what was recorded we can get a peak into some interesting numbers.

We see the most used Extraction Crisis was split between Deadly Legacy Virus Cured and Struggle for the Cube Continues, ranging from Threat 17 to 19. With the Secure Crisis cards, Intrusions Open Across City as Seals Collapse was used quite a bit with Super-Powered Scoundrels Form Sinister Syndicate and Mutant Madman Turns City Center Into Lethal Amusement Park.

As mentioned before, this was a LVO qualifier event and as such used the LVO Invitation Series rules. Which, at its core, uses those rules presented by Atomic Mass Games for tournament play. There are a few exceptions but they are more of pre-game procedures, such as placing Crises cards face down on the table. You can either randomly pick one OR roll a d6 to determine which one to choose; all of which is apart of a 10 minute period when the players can choose Crisis Cards and their roster.

The time also was adjusted to 1 hour and 45 minutes from 1 hour and 30 minutes; and tie-breaker rules were included to aid in the uncommon instances of ties. There is the option to use Chess Clocks but lets be real, this isn't Warhammer 40,000 or Warmachine. I find the inclusion of that rule in the packet unnecessary, more of a 'well, if the 40k crowd needs it, we might also'.  The answer to that is no you don't. We will save that for a post some other time.

While I await confirmation from a number of participants for interviews for my Youtube Channel and upcoming Podcast, I will search for more information concerning this event.  For those interested in the events statistics, I got you covered.
